Adiabatic flame temperature of hydrogen, methane, propane and octane in Kelvins

A combustion process without heat loss or gain is adiabatic.

The adiabatic flame temperature of some common fuel gases like hydrogen, methane, propane and octane with oxygen or air as oxidizers can be found below.

Fuel Adiabatic Flame Temperature (K)
Oxygen as Oxidizer Air as Oxidizer
Hydrogen - H2 3079 2384
Methane - CH4 3054 2227
Propane - C3H8 3095 2268
Octane - C8H18 3108 2277

The reactants enter the combustion process at 77oF and 1 atm pressure, and the products leaves the process at 1 atm pressure. The combustion is stoichiometric without any excess air.

Excess air will reduce the adiabatic flame temperature. Excess air is often introduced to avoid flame temperatures exceeding the limits sets by materials in the system.
