Valve authority express the ratio between pressure drop across the control valve compared to the total pressure drop across the whole circuit

The valve authority can be expressed as

N = dp_v / (dp_v + dp_c) (1)

where

N = valve authority

dp_v = pressure drop across a full open control valve (psi, Pa, bar)

dp_c = pressure drop across the circuit (psi, Pa, bar)

The valve authority should in general be in the range 0.2 to 0.5.
