Engineering ToolBox > Inductors - Energy Stored

Energy stored in the magnetic field

The energy stored in the magnetic field of an inductor can be expressed as

W = 1/2 L I2 (1)

where

W = energy stored (Joules)

L = inductance (henrys, H)

I = current (Amps, A)

Example - Energy Stored in Conductors

The energy stored in a conductor of 10 henrys where a current of 5 A flows can be calculated like

W = 1/2 10 (H) (5 (A))2

    = 125 Joules
